Vintage sport posters
Sports has always been a noble and fair way to find out who is the king of the hill. The posters on this page show us the romantic and admirable side of sport. Unfortunately sport has always been related to warfare because many qualities that are useful in sports are also handy at war. The vocabulary of sports and war has many similarities: attack, defense, shooting etc. This relation must have been much stronger in the time when it was a clear advantage if you could throw your javelin far and accurately. Finnish version of baseball (called pesapallo) was developed mainly for the purpose of making Finnish men throw hand-grenade far and accurately. The vintage posters here, fortunately, give us a whole different picture of sports. And I believe this is the true nature of sports. Citius, altius, fortius.The poster below is funny because it shows how unpractical clothes women wore when doing sports. They even used to play tennis wearing long skirts. Imagine today's tennis pros playing in long skirts. Might be boring to watch...
